WOVEN FROM THE FIELD
Hello and welcome to my latest blog introducing you to an exhibition I have coming up this Autumn.
WOVEN FROM THE FIELD will be at the RBSA (Royal Birmingham Society of Artists) gallery, in partnership with willow weaver, Sue Kirk. The exhibition will run from Tuesday 31st October – Saturday 11th November 2023.
Please watch this video to glean a small insight into the making of one of my new large wall hangings that will be central to the exhibition.
Willow weaver Sue Kirk and textile artist Rosalind Stoddart both use materials directly from their own immediate environments to create organic pieces that have simple clarity of aesthetic beauty. The softness of alpaca fibre of the majority of Rosalind’s work will complement the very different textures of Sue’s willow to create a visually strong exhibition, as well as one that will inspire through the different processes used – willow weaving, natural dyeing, felting, stitching and yarn weaving and the strong end results of each individual piece.

Rosalind’s new work inspired by spring seeds.

Both artists come from very similar sustainable perspectives within their artistic practice and their way of living. They both live in rural Northamptonshire and work almost exclusively from the willow that Sue and her husband grow and the alpacas that Rosalind has in the field behind her studio. For both this is a conscious decision, to have as small an impact as possible on the environment, to live a slower life and make slow art.
